Synopsis:

From debut author Cassie Alexander comes a spectacular new urban fantasy series where working the nightshift can be a real nightmare. Nothing compares to being Nightshifted.

Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bowels of County Hospital, Edie has her hands full with every paranormal patient you can imagine—from vamps and were-things to zombies and beyond…

Edie’s just trying to learn the ropes so she can get through her latest shift unscathed. But when a vampire servant turns to dust under her watch, all hell breaks loose. Now she’s haunted by the man’s dying words—Save Anna—and before she knows it, she’s on a mission to rescue some poor girl from the undead. Which involves crashing a vampire den, falling for a zombie, and fighting for her soul. Grey’s Anatomy was never like this...

My rating: ★★★☆☆

Edie is a nurse who works the night shift at a hospital. But the floor she works on isn't like any other... "normal" you've seen. The patients on Y4 aren't human! They're an assortment of vampires, shape shifters, zombies, and any other paranormal creature you can think of! That's right, apparently even these guys need medical attention.

Anyway, one normal day at work (well, as normal as a day can be on this floor) turns crazy after an incident with a patient. This leads to that and Edie kills one vampire in order to save a vampire girl, then she finds herself on vampire trial for this killing. Because her life wasn't complicated before... How will she get out if this one?

Me being a nursing student and all, the thing that caught my attention about this book was all the nursing stuff and Edie caring for all sorts of paranormal creatures! I just thought the premise was brilliant! However, the first part of the book I had no idea where the story was going... Well, not until Edie got it in her head that she HAD to save Anna. And even though it was explained WHY she had to and even though Anna did actually start to grow on my toward the (very) end, I just didn't really get that need... Probably because I couldn't really connect with Edie. Some of her actions just made me go "WHAT?!" She just really annoyed me sometimes, and honestly, her character fell kind of flat to me.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty okay book: I didn't find the story itself TOO interesting, but I did like the premise if the book. Plus, all the supernatural creatures and the nursing stuff was amazing!

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a comment! :)

  1. Oh my goodness! I didn't know you are a nursing student! Hello future fellow nurse! *high fives*

I'm quite intrigued by the fact that she's working as a nurse caring for paranormal creatures. It makes me wonder how you'd apply regular care routines to paranormals... I don't think vampires would do well with blood tests!

I'm a bit irritated by her wearing the more topical and no longer used nurse dress than the regular scrubs, not easy fighting stereotypes!

    1. Oh my gods! You're a nurse?! *high five* That is SO cool!

Bahaha! Yeah, that is initially what drew me to that book. I really wished there was more of a focus and her caring for the creatures though... that would've been much more interesting!

And YES! Me too! I mean, do how many nurses do you see wearing the dresses to work (I mean, besides movies)?? And this book was just recently published, so they should've given her some modern scrubs. Pero que le vas hacer? *sigh*

    2. Agreed! Even in modern medical dramas, like Grey's Anatomy everyone wear scrubs!

I'm a RN, been working in Oncology for the last 8 years, and one of the advantages of night shifts (if they're good) is having time to catch up on my reading! ;)
