Synopsis:

Poppy Miller swears she will get payback for Jack Sabers’s cruel prank that humiliated her in front of all her friends.

Then her classmates start turning up dead.

All eyes are on Poppy. Is Poppy being framed? Or did the kids of Shadyside High mess with the wrong girl?

In this all-new Fear Street story, only one thing’s for sure—someone is out for DEADLY revenge.

My rating: ★★★★☆

“You picked the wrong girl to do this to!” I screamed. “The wrong girl. I’m warning you! I’m warning you now. I’ll pay every one of you back!”

I gotta say, this book grabbed my right from the start.

My name is Poppy Miller, and I am not a criminal.

Alright, tell me more! Lol. I am really loving this new Fear Street series, I gotta tell you. I really enjoyed this book! And I really loved the writing—R.L. Stine has a way with words. It was kind of interactive in a way, almost as if Poppy was talking to you, telling you her story, and it was fun! But I do have to say, that we had too many character introductions there at the beginning. It took me a little bit before I could keep them all straight.

Overall, I was pretty meh about the characters. I liked some aspects of them, but they were all just so dumb! (More on that later.) Poppy, for one, was super rude when it came to her sort-of-but-not-really boyfriend Keith. Poor guy. Yeah, he’s boring, but you don’t have to be so mean about it! And there is actually a very interesting, valid reason he is the way he is.

So, I suspected the killer sort of early one, and so did Poppy, but I was wondering whether we were wrong or we were actually getting a smart main character. Turns out Poppy’s pretty smart... in some ways. Lol. What I mean by that is dumb pranks are dumb. I seriously did not get it. Poppy and her friends were absolute idiots! And Poppy trying to impress the delinquent Jack? Oh my god, why?! Stop! This how everything started. Poppy is the victim of an awful prank, she gets pissed off and her friends start dying. Either someone is framing her, or Poppy has really just gone off the rails. But which is it?

R.L. Stine got real in this one. Back in the day there were things that weren’t talked about in his YA books—underage drinking, sex... you name it. But in reality these are things that happen. So I was very surprised to find not only underage drinking in this book, but also self harm! Now, I don’t condone either of these things and I can’t say R.L. Stine went into incredible depth into this, but they happened in this book! Look at you, Bob!

And last, let’s talk about those cliffhangers that end up being fantasies. Look, I read a lot of Fear Street, so I expect them, but that doesn’t mean those fake-outs don’t get annoying. So annoying.

But overall, I actually enjoyed the read! I was very into the mystery and finding out what the heck was going on, even though our characters got themselves in this situation for being absolute idiots. Lol. I’m still very much looking forward to the next book in the series, though!

The Fear Street connection: Keith lives on Fear Street.
