Synopsis: A WOMAN WHO DREAMS OF THE FUTURE...

Once upon a time, I was Vesper Quill, a lowly lab rat using my seer magic and engineering skills to repair broken appliances at a Regal-owned corporation. These days, I’m one of the most infamous and wanted fugitives in the Archipelago Galaxy, along with Kyrion Caldaren, my partner.

Kyrion and I are hiding out on a distant planet when we are offered a chance to train at a prestigious facility in hopes of better understanding our truebond, the psionic connection that lets us share thoughts, feelings, skills, and more.

Mastering our magic is the only way we can hope to defeat our many enemies and make my dreams of a safe future a reality, so Kyrion and I accept the invitation. But evil forces are at work, and our training exercise is not what it seems, plunging us both into another deadly situation with only bad options.

A MAN WHO CAN’T ESCAPE HIS PAST...

I’ve always been Kyrion Caldaren, a Regal lord with telekinesis, telepathy, telempathy, and other powerful psionic abilities. I might have gone rogue from the Arrows, the Imperium’s elite warriors, but my fighting skills are as sharp and deadly as ever.

Vesper Quill and I need help with our truebond, so we agree to participate in a rigorous training exercise designed to test the depths of our connection. But a new enemy has other plans, and we’re soon separated and confronted with one dangerous obstacle after another.

But my love for Vesper is stronger than any forces set against us, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make my way back to her—and kill anyone who gets in my way.

My rating: ★★★★⯪

This is one of my favorite series because I love the blend of sci-fi and fantasy... and this is also by one of my favorite authors 😆

This book was on the shorter side—not quite a novella, but shorter than the other books in the series. However, that fact is not the only thing that made this book a quick read. This book takes place mostly all in one day! I love when books do that! It just feels that much more exciting and action-packed. And I love Jennifer Estep’s action sequences as is. Lol. She's mentioned in the past how action scenes are her favorite type of scenes to write, and you can tell because they're always amazing!

But anyway, in this book, Kyrion and Vesper are still trying to get a hold on their bond and learn how it works and how to use it to its full potential. So they go to this training program specifically designed for them to test and really solidify their bond. And the place actually sounded really cool! It was made up of a bunch of different biomes, wherein they would face challenges and would need to find a way to defeat them. Except, once they're locked inside the training arena, things get a little more lethal than expected... So is this just part of the training program, or are they actually in real danger?

I loved this premise so much! And it was just such a fun read! I already mentioned the action, but the setting was great too, as was the mystery behind what was happening. And I, of course, also love the characters. Vesper, particularly, had a really great fight scene! It was so satisfying! But more than that, I love how smart she is and how she uses not only her abilities, but also her wit to get out of really tough situations.

Kyrion also had a really good fight scene. For him, I really enjoyed him tapping into the bond to use Vesper's powers in conjunction with his own to defeat his opponent. I just think it's really cool how they are able to use each other's powers through the bond.

One thing I loved at the start of the series that I'm liking less and less as each book goes by is the romance. I could not put my finger on what it was that I was not liking anymore until I talked it over with a friend: the codependency. But not only that, Kyrian's overprotectiveness of Vesper is suffocating. Don't get me wrong, I love an overprotective male protagonist, but Kyrion is just too much. I really hope that when they finally get a hold of their bond, the codependency will resolve, because it's honestly kind of exhausting.

That being said, though, I really did enjoy this book and I am looking forward to the next one!
