Synopsis: Harper Madison isn't like other girls. She has extraordinary powers, but her inability to control them has gotten her kicked from so many foster homes she's lost count. Shadowford Home for Girls is her last chance, and she hopes Peachville High will be the fresh start she needs.
At first, life appears to be looking up for Harper. She's making new friends and is strangely drawn to the guy next door. But when evidence ties her to the gruesome murder of a Demons cheerleader, Harper discovers this small town has a big secret.
This book was, uh, something. I liked the premise, I’ll give it that. I love protagonists with cool powers and mysteries... all that stuff is interesting. But this book? Yikes. I mean it started off okay, and quite intriguing. One of the cheerleaders at Harper’s new school was murdered and someone is framing Harper for it.
And to top it off, Harper has some... abilities that have gotten her kicked out of multiple foster homes. Abilities that she still hasn’t gotten under control. All this was interesting. Plus the introduction of Jackson, the love interest? I was into it... Until I wasn’t.
This new town she moves to is SO freaking weird! The way everyone fawned over the cheerleaders was bizarre and I just wanted to know what the hell was happening. But then the main character got amnesia and I hated everything.
Honestly, I don’t even know why I continued reading. I sped read through probably the last half of the book just because I wanted to be done. Idk, I was curious and hopeful that this would get better again I guess. But it didn’t. At one point Mrs. King tells Harper to be patient which I found HILARIOUS because I was fresh out of patience! I wanted answers and I wanted Jackson, but I got neither!
Listen, I’ve never been vehemently against amnesia, sometimes it works, but here it absolutely did not work for me. I actually had the next two books in the series that I got as freebies once upon an Amazon sale, but honestly, I’m not going to continue. I don’t want to deal with the cheerleaders anymore, and especially not the amnesia. It was just frustrating because everyone around Harper was gaslighting the ever-loving shit out of her and we, the audience, knew! It was all basically a do-over, and everything that happened in the beginning and the Harper we first met, all of that was for nothing! I’m sure she’ll get her memory back in an eventual sequel, but I’m not gonna do that to myself. In fact, I did something I never do: I read spoilers for the sequels.
I was curious, okay! Lol. And all I’m gonna say is, I’m glad I decided to delete those two sequels from my Kindle.

Hmm, you're better than me with pushing all the way through! I probably would have given up. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I'm trying to get better at DNFing books, but I'm still not great at it 😅 lol
