Synopsis: Vin fulfilled the prophecy and released the power gathered in the Well of Ascension. But it was all a trick, and now the godlike being Ruin has been unleashed on the world, bent on its destruction by earthquake and Fire.

Having escaped death only through becoming a Mistborn himself, Emperor Elend Venture now hopes to find clues left behind by the Lord Ruler that will help them fight back. Legends speak of a hero, but were any prophecies not corrupted? To make up for being duped, Vin must unravel the truth so she can become the Hero of Ages before Ruin can wipe out all life on the planet.

My rating: ★★★★★

She'd called herself hero, and had released the enemy all the while thinking that she was sacrificing her own needs for the good of the world.

When I finished reading the last book, I said that I was not okay. Well, I'm doubly not okay after finishing this one.

It was so good though! It immediately started with action and Elend being an absolute badass Mistborn. It was so cool! Of course, he has a great teacher in Vin. Lol. And his training with Tindwyl in the last book has also really paid off.

Yomen's expression darkened. "How did a man like you ever end up at a table of negotiation?"
"I was trained by a surly Mistborn, a sarcastic Terrisman, and a group of disrespectful thieves," Elend said, sighing.

Though I was very worried about the changes he went through—the hardness he now has and the very difficult decisions he needed to make, decisions that the old Elend wouldn't have made... It was worrisome, but I also understood his motives.

For now, Elend had only one goal.
Survival.

As for his wife Vin (I know! they're married now! Ah! 😆), she's still amazing and badass and went through some great character growth.

She didn't worry if she'd find acceptance or belief. She'd slain the Lord Ruler. She'd married Elend Venture. And, more remarkable than either accomplishment, somehow among the chaos and mess she'd discovered who she was. Not a girl of the streets, though that was where she'd been raised. Not a woman of the court, though she appreciated the beauty and grace of the balls. Someone else.
Someone she liked.

Vinnnn 😭 Plus, she made Sure Elend didn't get himself killed. Lol. I love them. I love how well they complement one another.

One character we got to see more of in this book was Spook! He had very minor roles in the last two books, but his character really got developed in this book, and he actually had a very important role throughout the story. I absolutely loved following him and getting to know him better. He's a Mistling, so we got to explore his ability. But we also saw what his uncle's death did to him. Following him and seeing him be a hero was great!

And then there's Sazed, who, after Tindwyl died, basically went through an identity crisis in regards to the religions he studied. It made me so sad to see him struggle not only with his grief, but also with his belief in religions. It was so important to him!

Aside from the badass characters and the amazing action, another thing I have consistently enjoyed about this series is the developing mythos and how the whole magic system came to be. The whole thing with Ruin and Preservation, hemalurgy, and even how Elend became a Mistborn at the end of the last book—it was all so good! The magic system was just so interesting and cool, and I really loved how it was all explained and all the dots were connected in this book.

Like I said, though, that ending RUINED (pun intended 😆) me! 😭 Brandon Sanderson is not afraid to kill off characters, let me tell you. So don't get too attached to any of them. I certainly failed at that lol 🥲

But as bittersweet as that ending was, I have to say, it's the ending that made sense. And despite all the tragedy, I did like the outcome. I wish we could follow these characters post- all this happening. Unfortunately, the sequel Mistborn series takes place about 300 years later. Which is not to say that I'm not excited for that series, because I am. I guess I'm just really going to miss these characters.

This was just a really solid series all the way through. It had great characters who had fun banter...

"I wouldn't have thought it possible for things to be worse without the Lord Ruler. But, well, we've certainly made a mess! Destroying the world. That's no mean feat, if you think about it. I wonder if we should be impressed with ourselves.”

(I love Breeze 😆) a great magic system with equally amazing world-building, and intriguing mythos that explained and connected everything. 10/10 would recommend (and read again)!

I am mountains that crush. I am waves that crash. I am storms that shatter. I am the end.
