Synopsis: REWARD OFFERED: Apprentice to The Villain wanted for treason (light), magical property damage (alleged), and one incident involving a weaponized scone (accurate). Frequently seen with a grumpy frog (crowned, judgmental). Answers to “Evie” or “Stop that.”

Evie Sage didn’t mean to become the right-hand woman to the kingdom’s most terrifying villain. One minute, she was applying for an entry-level position that promised “light paperwork and occasional beheadings,” and the next, she was knee-deep in magical mayhem, murder plots, and an entirely inappropriate crush on her brooding, sharp-jawed, walking disaster of a boss.

Now, with a magical prophecy unraveling, assassins showing up in the break room, and a suspicious amount of frogs wearing crowns, Evie has to figure out how to survive her job without setting the kingdom on fire—or her dignity, which is hanging by a very sarcastic thread.

Being evil-adjacent was never part of the five-year plan. But then again... neither was falling for The Villain.

A magical office comedy with grumpy bosses, snarky frogs, and definitely-not-feelings.

My rating: ★★★☆☆

I don't know what's going on with this series, but it is progressively getting worse and it's making me so sad! I literally gave the first book 5 stars! 😭

I still, for the most part, love how funny the book is, especially the banter.

“The fool’s wandered off in a house he doesn't recognize filled with low-rate criminals."
"Oh, sir, that's unkind. I don't think you're low-rate," she soothed.
He narrowed his eyes. "I didn't mean me."
"Oh." She clasped her hands behind her back, shaking her head quickly. "Me either.”

I really liked the sweet moments between the girls as those friendships developed. But Evie? Omg. In Spanish, we have this word, "Empalagar.'' I honestly don't know what the equivalent would even be, but it's basically when you eat too much of something sweet and you just can't anymore because you're starting to feel sick. This is basically how I'm starting to feel about Evie. At first, her quirkiness was fun, but it is honestly getting to be TOO much.

But my biggest problem with this series is that there is no variation and no progression to literally anything anything! Everything has been the same for THREE books! The slow burn romance in this book that I was originally enjoying earlier in the series because it's a trope I like, is still slow burn. Like, WAY slow. Like, way TOO slow.

Bestie, we are THREE books in. This is getting ridiculous! And not only that, but there were so many side quests. Like, SO many. I found myself not caring much about them. Plus, the so-called twists in this book were predictable.

The sameness of this series is getting old. But I am reading the last book of the series out of sheer curiosity. Lol. (Also, was a four-book series really necessary? Because I'm thinking no 🤷‍♀️)

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! 😊
