Synopsis:

As if trying to fit in at a new school isn't stressful enough, sixteen-year-old Nikki Donovan just found out that her long-lost father is, in fact, the demon king of the Shadowlands—the world that separates and protects us from the Underworld. When she is brought there by the mysterious—and surprisingly cute—messenger Michael, she learns that her father is dying, and he wants her to assume the throne. To complicate matters, a war is brewing between the Shadowlands and the Underworld, her half-demon qualities are manifesting, and her growing feelings for Michael are completely forbidden. Ruling a kingdom, navigating a secret crush, and still making it home by curfew—what's a teenage demon princess to do?

My rating: ★★★★☆

Nikki is your average, normal teenager, dealing with normal teen stuff-- high school, crushes, and so on. But her "normal" life takes a sharp tun into Crazyville when she meets a strange, but handsome, guy named Michael. Michael claims that Nikki is a half-demon Princess, daughter of the demon king of the Shadowlands. Nikki knows virtually nothing about her dad; he left Nikki and her mom even before Nikki was born. And now some weird guys comes to tell her that not only is he still out there, but that he is a demon king? Nikki writes Michael off as crazy and tells him to leave her alone. However, weird, supernatural things start happening to her and she cant help but wonder if maybe Michael wasn't so wrong after all. Also, she cant ignore that undeniable connection she senses every time she is near Michael. Nikki finds herself thrust into a world she didn't know existed and forced to make a decision that could save or destroy her father's kingdom.

I've actually had Reign or Shine for a while, but I just got around to it now, and I can truthfully say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! Nikki was a very spunky and fierce character, which I loved about her. Throughout most of the book she was a very strong, and smart, character.

Michael... *swoons* He was very mysterious and even kinda creepy at the beginning, but as we got to know him, he really grows on you! He is very sweet and very protective, which I absolutely love about him!

Nikki's dad surprised me as much as he surprised Nikki, and that is certainly not a bad thing. I actually really liked him and I really want to know more about him and this whole other realm he watches over.

There was one thing about the book though... the so-called plot twist? Yeah, I saw coming from hundreds of pages away! I figured out what was going on, right down to the last detail, even before Nikki started to put the pieces of the puzzle together. It's unfortunate, really, since I like being surprised =/

Overall, however, I really liked the story... I thought it was very fun with all sorts of magical things going on, and it kept me hooked all the way till the end. In fact, I read it in one sitting! :D I cant wait to read book two and see how Nikki deals with all this new stuff.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a comment! :)
