Synopsis: They thought the ship would be their salvation.

Zahra knew every detail of the plan. House of Wisdom, a massive exploration vessel, had been abandoned by the government of Earth a decade earlier, when a deadly virus broke out and killed everyone on board in a matter of hours. But now it could belong to her people if they were bold enough to take it. All they needed to do was kidnap Jaswinder Bhattacharya—the sole survivor of the tragedy, and the last person whose genetic signature would allow entry to the spaceship.

But what Zahra and her crew could not know was what waited for them on the ship—a terrifying secret buried by the government. A threat to all of humanity that lay sleeping alongside the orbiting dead.

And then they woke it up.

My rating: ★★★☆☆

Last year I read Dead Space by this same author... well, I should say I tried to read it because it ended up being my one and only DNF of the year 😅 However, I already owned Salvation Day so I thought I would give this author another chance and, well, I didn’t DNF it! I didn’t love it, but I actually finished it this time! Lol.

My issue with Dead Space was that I just found it very unexciting for a thriller. I felt like it would go off into these irrelevant tangents that were literally putting me to sleep and I just could not. And reading this book, I hate to say it, but there’s just something very boring about the writing 🙈 I realized that maybe they weren’t irrelevant tangents, per se, but maybe the book was trying to give some background details that I apparently cared nothing about. This book did that too, going deep into details and trying to paint a background, and I could not care less. I found myself skimming these parts so I could get back to the present story 😅

I really enjoyed the premise of this book though: an abandoned spaceship where a deadly virus is reawakened. Loved that! There was also the drama of the kidnapping which I was kinda meh about. And the “family” Zahra grew up in after her father’s death was giving culty vibes that I was not a fan of right from the beginning. In fact, the first note I left myself while reading this was: “Girly pop, it sounds like you're in a cult 👀 Especially with a leader whose name is Adam?? Come on 🙄” 😂 I was NOT into it from the start. And while I didn’t really love/connect with any of the characters, I did appreciate the growth Zahra went through.

I gave this author a second chance but I honestly don’t think her writing is for me. I didn’t hate it, it was a fine book. But that’s it. It was fine. I liked the premise of the book, the mystery surrounding this virus, and what really happened on the spaceship all those years ago—I really enjoyed that aspect of the book!—but everything else was kinda... meh, unfortunately.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! 😊
