Relax & Read-athon: Spooky Edition

I have nothing going on this Halloween weekend, and then I saw Jane's readathon post on All She Wrote, and I thought that would be a fun thing to do! The funny thing is that she was inspired to do a readathon after she saw me do a readathon a couple weeks ago... and now here I am! 😂 It's a never-ending cycle of readathons, and I'm okay with that 🤣

I know I've mentioned it before, but I love a readathon! Especially right now, when I'm struggling to read, because they really hold me accountable and force me to read. Which would usually be a bad thing, but I'm already in a reading slump, so how much worse can it get 😭

But anyway, this readathon caught my attention because of the spooky theme, hence why I thought it would be perfect to do during Halloween weekend. You can check out the full video here! (And yes, I am going to be celebrating Spooky Season until the weekend because I'm Mexican and in my opinion Spooky Season doesn't end until Dia de Los Muertos does 😆)

The other thing that caught my attention about this readathon was the board game! I love a bookish board game! I actually make one each quarter of the year for this group I help moderate on Goodreads! Lol. But anyway, this one is different than what I'm used to because you can literally start anywhere you want, and it can basically be never-ending... or at least until your readathon timer is up. Lol. (There are also two different board games you can pick from, but I obviously went with the spooky one. Lol.) At the time of writing this on Thursday, I have not picked where I want to start. That's future me's problem 😆

Speaking of time, this readathon is not joking when it says RELAX & Read-athon. It is very relaxed when it comes to time. The creator of this challenge said it can be 24 hours long, a week, or even longer! It is literally up to you! I love that! So I thought I would make this a 72-hour challenge, Friday-Sunday.

My goal for this challenge is to finish one book a day... hopefully. Lol. And this time I picked some short books!

Both of these are horror books I recently purchased, plus right now I'm reading a cozy mystery. But don't worry, I have a ton of other books on my immediate tbr I can choose from too. Lol.

Today I found out that there is a birthday party on Saturday... I swear, every SINGLE time I do a readathon, something like this happens 🤦‍♀️🤣 Luckily for me, my family knows me well and they don't bat an eye when I pull out a book at a family gathering 😆

Friday - 7am update:

I'm surprised I actually got up at a reasonable time this morning. Lol. I inadvertantly started the challenge last night at midnight because I stayed up reading and finishing up my cozy mystery, but after that, as I tried to go to sleep, it was nothing but tossing and turning for a while 😣 Unfotunately that seems to be my norm lately. My point being (dang adhd and tangents! Lol) that I went to sleep very late but I am shockingly up at 7am for the readathon! Lol.

As I said, I already finished a book! I unfortunately didn't love it. It was SO boring, but I didn't dnf it because I liked the premise and the town 😅 While I read for a couple hours last night, I only read about 30 minutes after midnight started.

As for the board, I decided to start on the bottom right on Favorite Beverage, and after that, I'm moving clockwise. I rolled a 5 and landed on Move 2 Spaces, then moved to Spooky Book.

I haven't made my tea quite yet. I think I'm going to read in bed for a while before I get up and shower and make me tea and all that. But I will start my Spooky Book now! I'm gonna go with this one:

I'm a little bit nervous because I'm pretty sure this is my first splatterpunk novel. But I read horror all the time and have seen some questionable horror movies, so I should be fine 😆 (From my understanding, splatterpunk refers to a book being super gory... wish me luck 😅 Lol.)

Friday - 1pm update

This morning I ended up getting out of bed at like 9am 😆 I showered, I ate breakfast, I made my tea, and I got back into reading.

This apple pie spread from Trader Joe's is SO good btw! I also tried their pumpkin one and it was also good. But tbh, I'm not that big a fan of pumpkin spice like a lot of people are. Give me apples and cinnamon and I'll be happy 😆

Reading-wise, I'm about 50% into the book and... um... It's something, alright. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into reading this book but I was SO wrong 😭 There's only one scene that's scarred me for life so far (I literally can't stop thinking about it 🤢), and I'm scared what else this book has in store for me 😩 I keep thinking that that one scene is as bad as it's going to get, but I've never read splatterpunk! I don't know that for sure! Anyway, I could stop reading this because it is honestly making me uncomfortable, but I'm not gonna lie when I say I could not look away from that scene. It was vile, but I read the entire thing. Sometimes I skim read, like I did the earlier cozy mystery because it was SO boring, but I haven't done that with this book yet. My excuse is that this book is SUPPOSED to be vile and make you uncomfortable, so I'm going to stick with it as long as I can because I actually don't hate it. I'm intrigued by the plot. So we will see 😅 I know my limits when it comes to horror movies, and maybe this book will help me figure out where my limits are when it comes to horror books 😂

I've only read about 2.5 hours so far today. After reading for a bit after breakfast, I took a tiny nap, then I went to the store to buy some snacks for later. But I just got back and I'm gonna get back to reading!

Friday - 4:30pm update

I... think I need to bleach my brain. I should've stopped while I was still ahead 😭 And that's all I'll say on that book because I would like to stop thinking about it 🙃

I have read for almost 6 hours, finished my second book, which honestly might've been a bad idea, and now I need a break.

As for the board, I rolled a 4 and got Enjoy a Cozy Hobby... thank god 😩 I'm probably gonna go play some Power Wash Simulator 2 and put on a show after I go eat some Costco pizza. Yum 🤤

Friday - 10pm update

I had dinner and then I played some PWS 2. It took me a while to finish the one level, a carnival stand, but it was fun! Oh, also, we had 3 trick or treaters!! That's 3 more than last year! 😆 They're lucky I had a stash of Reese's pumpkins I bought last weekend for myself 😂 We just don't get trick or treaters where we live, so this little surprise made me very happy 🎃

Another thing that made me happy is that one of my brothers was in Disney World this week and he just got back, and he brought me back this cute Baymax plush! He's so soft and squishy! I love him! 😭

And moving forward on the board, I rolled a 4 and landed on Set the Ambiance, then I rolled a 1 and landed on Creepy Cover. I won't start these prompts till tomorrow... I was going to light a candle tonight, but then my electric lighter decided to die right then so I had to charge it and then I couldn't find my other normal lighter lol. It's fine though. I wasn't planning on reading the second book on my tbr for the challenge today anyway.

Tonight I think I'm going to read a volume of Sakamoto Days and then I may start this nonfiction book. Need a couple of palate cleansers 😅

Saturday - 12am update

Okay, I think I am done for the day. I finished my manga, and I read about 50% of Mama Didn't Raise a Pendeja. I am really loving that last book. It is so reassuring and I just love the familiarity of the "anti-affirmations" lol.

I read for a total of 7 hours and 12 minutes, which isn't bad. I finished two books and one manga, and I'm halfway through another short book. Short books are definitely the way to go in a readathon! All of the ones I've read so far have been under 300 pages. I'm still not tired so I think I'm going to play some ACNH, maybe? I'm telling you, my sleeping schedule is so messed up right now. I slept maybe 5 hours last night, and the nap I took this afternoon was so short that my smart watch didn't even capture it. Lol. I'm hoping the upcoming change in time will help. Or it might make it worse! Who knows! Lol. Anyway, I'm hoping to be up by 7am tomorrow, but we will see.

So that's what I'm doing this weekend. Let me know if you guys have any fun plans for Halloween, or what spooky books you're reading this season!
