Synopsis: Someone is trying to kill her. It’s his job to make sure they don’t succeed.
As a news writer, Elliana Devereaux has made her share of enemies: Scam artists, drug dealers, self-proclaimed werewolves—the usual.
After an attempt on her life, Elliana's parents hire a bodyguard to protect her. And not just any bodyguard. Nope. They hire her teenage crush, Mateo Alvarado. Handsome, tall, muscular, and way too cocky, Mateo.
He broke her heart once, so she’s determined to have nothing to do with him.
Avoiding Mateo becomes impossible when he shows up at her office threatening to cuff her if she doesn’t come with him.
Yeah, her coworkers totally won’t talk about that.
How long can Elliana keep Mateo at arm’s length when everything about her protector secretly draws her in?
I love Janette Rallison’s books, but I think this one has the best opening line...
EIliana Devereaux was standing in her bathroom in an oversized T-shirt, fluffy slippers, and an avocado face mask when she realized someone was trying to kill her.
It’s SO good! I was hooked from the start! Who is trying to kill her? Why? And how?? She’s literally home in her pajamas!
It’s safe to say that I loved this book, which I’m not even surprised because, like I said, I love Janette’s books. I used to not read very much contemporary romance, but this author’s books are the ones that slowly got me into the genre. But this book in particular was more of a romantic suspense, which I have never read from this author before, but I liked it! I think the suspense and the romantic elements were balanced well. There was a nice bit of action at the end, and if you know me you know I love a good action scene! But the thing that I love about Janette’s books is, of course, the romance. It is always cute and I love how she puts her characters in awkward situations, and this book was no different!
Elliana is a reporter investigating affordable housing projects where the buildings may not be up to code, and the president of the company and other important figures may or may not be stealing the money that’s supposed to be going into these homes. Sooo yeah, you can see why someone would want to silence her.
I really liked the story and enjoyed following Elliana as she tried to figure out who was after her. Plus, the fact that the bodyguard her parents hire for her is her old childhood crush...
Yes, please! I love a good childhood friends-to-lovers trope! Elliana and Mateo lost touch over the years so I liked seeing them getting reacquainted, plus there were some flashback moments to their childhood sprinkled throughout and I really enjoyed that!
And I liked the characters as well. I was a little worried once I got into the book because Elliana is rich, and wealthy characters can be hit or miss for me, depending on characterization. I just cannot deal with entitled and self-centered rich kids, but I’m happy to report that Elliana was not that at all! Mateo and his family actually worked at her family’s ranch, and she and her family always treated their workers well, which I really appreciated. She is just a good person who is trying to shed some light on this terrible housing situation. She was likable and she was smart! I love a smart main character! As for Mateo...
He was sweet and protective, which yeah it’s literally his job, but you see that he actually cares about her and that this isn’t just some job for him. I loved him! And his family! The way his kid twin sisters were trying to get these two together cracked me up! I loved them!
I really enjoyed this book overall! I liked the mystery of the housing issue and Elliana’s attempted murder, I loved the childhood friends-to-lovers trope, the romance was super cute and sweet, and it was just a fun (and a little suspenseful) read! I did feel like the epilogue was a smidge too long, but aside from that, you honestly cannot go wrong with a Janette Rallison romance.
