Synopsis: They did the impossible, ending the thousand-year reign of the godlike Lord Ruler. Now Vin, the former street urchin turned powerful Mistborn, and Elend Venture, the idealistic young nobleman who loves her, must build a healthy new society in the ashes of an empire.

As tensions grow in the wake of the uprising, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows.

It may just be that killing the Lord Ruler was the easy part. Surviving the aftermath of his fall is going to be the real challenge.

My rating: ★★★★★

The Lord Ruler was dead, but the story did not seem finished.

This book was insane in the best way possible!

Right from the start, things were bad. You think everything was resolved when the Lord Ruler died? Nope!

Kelsier had been a man beyond convention... a man who had been able to defy reality. He'd thought that by giving his life to overthrow the Lord Ruler, he would secure freedom for the skaa. But what if his sacrifice had opened the way for a greater danger, something so destructive that the Lord Ruler's oppression was a preferable alternative?

Elend is king now, which is great, BUT his own (terrible) father is trying to overthrow him! There are armies outside of Luthadel biding their time to attack. Yes, armies, as in more than one. And the mists started coming out during the day! And no, that was not good, either. Like I said, things were not going great for the characters. And I ate it up! The tension... Omg I cannot tell you how stressful the fights were! And I was right to be stressed because this author is not afraid of killing off characters 😭 I was not okay.

Speaking of the action, I freaking loved it! I am an action girly and Brandon Sanderson just does action so well! Plus, it helps that Vin is an absolute badass. She is awesome in every sense of the word. I love her!

Writing diverse and just great characters is another thing the author is good at. Not only is Vin a badass, but she also went through some pretty interesting character development. As did Elend! What with him being king and trying to hold onto the title despite several outside forces trying to take it from him. And not to mention the rest of Kelsier's crew—I love them! And I love all their fun banter!

Elend looked over at him. "The Assembly is a mess, a half-dozen warlords with superior armies are breathing down my neck, barely a month passes without someone sending assassins to kill me, and the woman I love is slowly driving me insane."
Vin snorted at this last part.
"Oh, is that all?" Ham said. "See? It's not so bad after all. I mean, we could be facing an immortal god and his all-powerful priests instead.”

I loved it all! The worldbuilding, the magic system, the cool characters and the growth they went through... It was so good! This was just heartbreaking and bleak and anxiety-inducing, but also very exciting. And that ending was INSANE! I can't believe all of that happened! It had honestly been such a long time since a book kept me up past my bedtime, but this one did it! And then the day after I finished it, I was at the library the moment the doors opened to get The Hero of Ages. This was the easiest 5 stars I have given 😆

“... Elend, what are we going to do?”
He looked at her for a moment, then turned back toward the city and its people. "We're going to do what Kelsier taught us, Vin. We're going to survive.”
