I love manga, and I love horror, but even I find it hard to believe that I still had not read any Junji Ito thus far in my life. Lol. Luckily, that's finally changed! Lol.
This book, in particular, is a collection of stories, so I thought it would be a good one to start with and see what the mangaka has to offer. And while I didn't love it, I did enjoy it for the most part. It was creepy and the illustrations were definitely horrific, which I loved. And sometimes it was just straight up gross. Lol. With manga reviews, I usually like to include panels to show the art, but I won't with this one because I don't want to traumatize anyone. Lol. I almost traumatized myself! 😆
Here's what happened: I am prone to migraines, and one day, when I had a bad one that felt like my brain was trying to escape through my eyeballs, I took some Excedrin. That helps like 99% of the time, but I'm almost always left feeling nauseous and discombobulated even after the pain is gone. WELL, the day I read this, I was post-migraine, and I kid you not, the story called The Licking Woman made me gag. It was so gross to look at that I almost threw up! 😆 This was most definitely the fault of my post-migraine state, but it was pretty gross. Lol.
So yeah, this did a good job of being horrifyingm which is exactly what I want in a horror book. Lol. It was also kind of insane, but also interesting. However, the stories were also super weird, and I don't think they were really my kind of weird, you know? I think that was my issue with it. I still have another Junji Ito manga, though, and I'm looking forward to giving that one a shot! Maybe a full-length, one-story manga will be more my thing. And I genuinely did love the art style! No other manga has given me a visceral reaction, that's for sure 😆😂
