Synopsis: The wolves are circling and a young king will face his greatest challenge in the explosive finale of the instant #1 New York Times-bestselling King of Scars Duology.
The Demon King. As Fjerda's massive army prepares to invade, Nikolai Lantsov will summon every bit of his ingenuity and charm—and even the monster within—to win this fight. But a dark threat looms that cannot be defeated by a young king's gift for the impossible.
The Stormwitch. Zoya Nazyalensky has lost too much to war. She saw her mentor die and her worst enemy resurrected, and she refuses to bury another friend. Now duty demands she embrace her powers to become the weapon her country needs. No matter the cost.
The Queen of Mourning. Deep undercover, Nina Zenik risks discovery and death as she wages war on Fjerda from inside its capital. But her desire for revenge may cost her country its chance at freedom and Nina the chance to heal her grieving heart.
King. General. Spy. Together they must find a way to forge a future in the darkness. Or watch a nation fall.
I still think that the Six of Crows duology is the superior series in the Grishaverse 😆, but I did enjoy the overall story in this series. Also, I love Nikolai, so it's always great when he's around. Lol.

Anyway, that's one thing I love about this series: The characters! Well, most of them. Lol. As I mentioned, I love Nikolai and how clever and charming he is. I also think he's a great ruler, so everything that was happening politically was rough. It made me so sad for him 😢 I also love Zoya, and what a badass she continues to be. Plus, I very much enjoyed the romantic tension between her and Nikolai 😏
And Nina, omg love her! All of these characters are just so clever and just good. I really appreciated Nina sacrificing herself by returning to be a spy in the ice palace for the greater good. It was tense, and it made me nervous because she could've been found out at any moment. I still did not like her romance with Hanne, though. I liked Hanne as an individual, and the fact that she's the daughter of Brum was insane! But their romance happened way too fast after Nina buried Matthias. Like, it literally happened the moment she finished throwing the last pile of dirt on him 🙄
Also, I’m still bitter about Matthias being dead, okay? Especially considering the freaking Darkling didn't stay dead? Ugh! I was so over it when he showed up in the last book. And then this book just went to show how little he was needed in this story! I promise you, if he hadn't been added to this duology, it wouldn't have made a lick of difference to the story. He was useless and I very much disliked his POVs. Seriously could've done without.
Him (still):

Me (still):

BUT we do get an appearance from certain characters that made me extremely happy. Those interactions and just the banter in general throughout the book was so good! But I really did enjoy the overall story. It had good action and political intrigue. Despite my gripes with this series, I am going to miss it 🥹
