Synopsis:

Jillian Cade doesn’t believe in the paranormal, unlike her famous father, a professor and expert on the occult. Ever since he abandoned her to travel the world for “research,” she’s milked his reputation—and all the suckers who believe in the stuff—by taking over his private investigation firm. After all, a high school junior has to take care of herself, especially when she’s on her own.

Ironically, it’s when she takes on a case that might involve a totally non-paranormal missing person that things get strange. Particularly when Sky Ramsey—a new boy at school who insists on becoming her partner—won’t shut up about succubi, of all things.

As they investigate, Jillian is surprised by her feelings for Sky, which threaten to derail the investigation. But that surprise is no match for the shock of learning that there may be something to Sky’s succubi obsession after all.

My rating: ★★★★☆

Jillian Cade is Paranormal Investigator... who doesn’t actually believe in the paranormal. Except this time, on her most recent case, there might actually be something paranormal in the works. And that is one of the things I loved about this book!

And in Los Angeles, “no traffic” was every bit as fictional as “paranormal investigation.”

I thought that was really funny—this whole book was really funny and just an overall fun read! Plus, I am a huge fan of short chapters and this book had that too!

So, yeah, I liked that Jillian was a skeptic when it came to the paranormal, but also, sometimes it was a bit much. Like, you see these unexplainable things and the thought of it being paranormal doesn’t cross your mind for one second? I don’t believe it. But I did end up liking Jillian. Right from the start I knew I would like her! She is snarky and funny and takes shit from no one! I absolutely loved her and her feistiness!

Sky I thought was super cute and charming—pretty much the opposite of Jillian. Lol. But he was also frustrating at times. He was definitely holding something back from Jillian—keeping his own secrets, and it was infuriating! But overall, I really did like him. And another character I loved was Jillian’s cousin Norbert! He was so funny and I actually wish there would’ve been more of him in the book.

There was one plot twist in particular that absolutely blew my mind and I loved it!

My one caveat with this book is that it left SO MUCH stuff unanswered! First of all, we are introduced to some creatures that I’ve never heard of before so I don’t know if they were made up for this book or they actually exist in some world mythology. But these creatures weren’t explained all that well. I just don’t know what exactly they’re supposed to be or whatever.

And that end? Wtf?! That’s it?! It just sort of... stops. I mean, the case itself is resolved, but more questions about Jillian’s life are raised and none are answered! As of right now this is a standalone so I don’t know if there is an intention for a sequel, but seriously! Wtf dude!

But overall, I really liked this book. I liked the characters and the idea of a fake paranormal investigator coming across a potentially real paranormal situation. But there was just too much left unanswered!
