Synopsis: Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission – and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realises that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone. Or does he?

My rating: ★★★★⯪

I liked this book a whole lot more than I was expecting. Like, I heard it was good, but DAMN.

All you need to know is that the sun is dying, so they sent Ryan Gosling- err, I mean RYLAND GRACE-

They sent Grace out to space to save Earth 😅

Yes, even though he is not an astronaut. Lol. But he IS a scientist, and seeing him work through all the issues at hand was so fascinating! I found the science in this book so interesting! I’m such a nerd for this kind of stuff. Lol. Personally, I found that the way this was written, it made the science easy to understand. But I just really enjoyed the writing in general.

I also loved our protagonist, Grace. He was sassy, even when confused and afflicted with amnesia, but he was SO funny and I loved him! 🥰 (Side note: the cast Ryan Gosling in this role PERFECTLY 😭) One thing I really loved about his character was that the biggest reason he continued to work on the astrophages was because of his kids. He’s a teacher, and he really loved his kids. He didn’t want them to live in a dystopian world!

I cannot tell you how many times this book almost made me cry 😭 But it was SO good! The interactions between Grace and a certain character, their banter, how endearing their entire relationship was... Ugh, I loved it so much! 😭 This was just a solid read overall! The ending was bittersweet, but I enjoyed it. And I know I keep referring back to the movie, but I just can’t stop thinking about it because it was SO GOOD! The movie actually did this book justice! 😭 Read the book, watch the movie... they’re both great!
