Okay, I'm finally here with the Mid-Year Freakout Tag 😅 I know I'm late, but I've just been in a horrible reading/blogging slump 😩 I usually look forward to doing these kinds of posts, but right now... yikes 😬
Anyway, a couple years ago I smooshed together the questions from the original tag created by Ely and Chami with the revamped version from Jesse the Reader, and I've been using that combo since.
1. Best book you've read so far in 2026.
I loved this book so much! The historical/horror combo was so well done!
2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2026.
I love this series. And this one, with its added paranormal element, was incredibly fun!
3. New release you haven't read yet but want to.
I'll get to these... eventually 😅
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of 2026.
Two horror and two fantasy. Two from a new-to-me author, and two from authors I have loved for years and years 🥰
5. Biggest disappointment.
This had SO much potential. It tried to combine a lot of different elements that I liked, but it just didn't work out for me. It wasn't a horrible book — I gave it 3.5 stars. But it could've been SO much better!
6. Biggest surprise.
I am surprised at how much I loved this one! I thought it was just going to be your average YA horror, but NO! The Fear Street vibes it gave me made me extremely happy 🥰
7. New favorite author.
I've only read one of her books, to be fair. Lol. But her writing is great and I'm looking forward to reading her other books!
8. Newest fictional crush.
Susebron, shockingly. Iykyk.
9. Newest favorite character.
I loved the rebellious Siri!
10. Book that made you cry.
I don't think a book has made me cry so far this year, but I think this one came pretty close. Reading about some of the things Joe went through was really heartbreaking.
11. Book that made you happy.
Lynn Painter books always make me very happy and warm my black heart 🥰
12. Favorite book-to-movie/TV show adaptation you've seen this year.
Project Hail Mary was SO good!! I think I made it my entire personality for weeks after I saw it 😂 And I loved Murderbot as well! Two very well done adaptations.
13. Favorite post you've done this year.
I have been loving doing these readathons! And they're really fun to write and go back and update as I'm reading.
14. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or one you'd like to own).
Okay, so I don't actually have these yet, and I'm writing this post a bit ahead of time, BUT I am hoping I was able to preorder these yesterday! Lol.
15. What books do you need to read by the end of this year?
The Martian has been on my immediate TBR for an embarrassing amount of time and needs to be read, like 5 months ago 😆 I also want to catch up on all the Isabel Cañas books.
16. What's the best book recommendation you've received this year?
Okay, so I was already going to read this one, but then I was talking to a friend about it and it just made me want to read it more. Lol.
17. What was your first DNF of the year?
Sometimes this is a bad thing, but this year I haven't read a book so horrible that it needs to be DNFd. I don't think I've given out anything under 3 stars so far.
18. A new release from this year that you've read and your thoughts on it (good or bad).
I loved this one! It was SO creepy! And the whole concept was weird, but in a good way. Lol.
19. Do you feel your reading tastes have changed/shifted at all this year? (A new genre you love, a new favorite trope, or a new favorite theme?)
Lately I've been really enjoying these sort of historical nonfiction books with some science thrown in. It talks about a lot of different hypotheticals, some more wacky than others, and I've just been having a fun time with them.
20. A book you've read so far this year that you feel embodies the vibe of your reading year.
I feel like this year I've had some pretty good luck finding some great books. (Also, the title of this book makes me giggle every time because I have the sense of humor of a 10-year-old 😆)
I am not tagging anyone in particular, but feel free to do it yourself if you'd like! I'd love to see your answers! 😁
