Synopsis: Four years ago, a masked slasher began stalking the streets of New York City.

Maniac Harry is inhuman, unkillable and unstoppable. Which is why the authorities’ solution has been to ignore him, and let New Yorkers adapt to a world where death can strike at any moment. When Maniac Harry starts killing his way through the subway system, trauma-haunted political aide Gina Greene and disgraced NYPD detective Zelda Pettibone become determined to go rogue and destroy him. But how can they fight a monster when they can’t fight City Hall?

From Emmy Award-winning writer Elliott Kalan (The Daily Show, MST3K, Spider-Man & The X-Men) and artist Andrea Mutti (Port of Earth, Hellblazer, BUNNY MASK) comes the horrifying story of what happens when terror becomes the new normal. A frightening, thought-provoking, sometimes funny, always timely tale of murder, obsession and urban living, this volume contains the first arc, issues #1-5.

My rating: ★★★★☆

I love horror movies so I was very excited to read this comic because it’s supposed to be reminiscent of Friday the 13th, and a better Jason Takes Manhattan. Lol. And it actually was! 😆

This comic was heavily inspired by the Friday the 13th series (I mean, Glasswater Lake? 😂) and I very much enjoyed it! It was a bit gory and quite bloody, which I enjoyed. I really liked the illustrations—I know nothing about art, but they almost had this watercolor quality to them that I liked.

One of my favorite things about this comic is how jaded everyone is and how tired of Maniac Harry’s bullshit they are. This takes place about four years after Maniac Harry first attacks Times Square and kills a bunch of people. Now, Zelda and Gina are newly assigned to the Maniac Harry Task Force. But what cracked me up was that while they were reporting on this development, they were also talking about a new automated subway train that would soon be opening, and I kid you not, the reporter lady was more excited about the train than the Task Force put together in hopes of neutralizing Harry.

And the way they incorporated Harry sightings and Safety tips in their daily news reports... it was hilarious!

“If you see something, scream something.”

I can’t... it was hilarious! But there was also some very interesting commentary about closing your eyes and letting things happen, and just pretending things are normal.

As the title suggests, and as I mentioned previously, there’s a train involved.

I really enjoyed the climax set on the train! It was very cool and I liked all the bloody depictions. I just really enjoyed this story overall. It was good, but if I’m being honest, I don’t know if anything was really accomplished? We met the characters, chased Harry for a bit... but that’s kinda it. Of course, that’s probably more of a me issue because I don’t really read comic books—I’m used to full-length novels with an overarching plot. But that being said, this was a fun adventure! I loved the Friday the 13th vibes and all the blood 😆 And I really liked the characters, Gina and Zelda, too. I’m really looking forward to more of this story for sure!

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! 😊
