I love the Freak Out Tags! They are so much fun! And as always, I'll only be using books that I have read since July. This tag was modified by Books, Bones & Buffy from the original Mid Year Freak Out Tag.
Best Books I’ve Read Since July:
I have had such a horrible reading year, but this last half of the year it's been SO much better! I don't usually read a lot of hyped books, and tbh, I didn't realize Dungeon Crawler Carl was popular until after I read it 😂 One day I saw it at B&N, the bright, fun colors catching my attention. When I picked it up and read the description, I realized that one of my friends on Goodreads was reading this series and he was absolutely loving it, so I HAD to get it! And I'm glad I did because it was SO much fun!
Next, my new favorite series: Lorestalker 😍 I just loved the premise of this and the characters and just everything about it!
And last was a nonfiction book with anti-affirmations that I really needed to hear at the moment. Lol. It was so good and so familiar and soothing 😌
Best Sequels I’ve Read Since July:
More Lorestalker 😆 Look, this series just gave me strong Supernatural vibes (my favorite TV show), which was an added bonus. I just love it! And then I read the second book in the Mistborn series and it was amazing! The worldbuilding is just SO good, I adore the characters, and the magic system is really cool and interesting! And last, we got another book in the Section 47 series... finally! This series is filled with spies, assassins, magic, and lots and lots of action! It was a good one!
New Releases I Haven’t Read But Want To:
A spooky book from Kiersten White, a cute romance from Lynn Painter, and another retelling from Marissa Meyer. SO excited for all of these!
Biggest Disappointments:
I'm starting to wonder if cozy mysteries are just not for me. They were both pretty slow, the first more than the second, and then The Village Library DEMON-Hunting Society didn't really touch on said demon very much. And the society part was also pretty nonexistent.
Biggest Surprises:
And maybe because of my not-so-good luck with cozy mysteries, I went into this cozy fantasy a little apprehensive. But I shouldn't have worried because I love Julia Huni and I really enjoyed this book! This was actually my first cozy fantasy and I found it cozy indeed. It didn't feel slow like the previous two books, and I absolutely fell in love with the setting 😍
Favorite New Authors:
Oh, most definitely these two!
Books That Made Me Cry:
So, no books had really made me cry this year, but then I finished the last book in the Mistborn trilogy yesterday and I was an absolute mess 😭
Books That Made Me Happy:

I was so, so happy to have found the Lorestalker series. The Supernatural vibes definitely made me happy 😌 And it had been a while since we had a new Ellie Jordan book, so I was very happy when we finally got a new book in the series!
Most Anticipated Books For The 1st Half Of 2026:
Red Star Rebels (February 3rd, 2026) is a YA book by Amie Kaufman. I read the Aurora series a while back and I really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to this one.
The Fox and the Devil (March 10th, 2026) is a horror book by Kiersten White, and it sounds SO good!
The Caretaker (April 21st, 2026) is by Marus Kliewer, who wrote We Used to Live Here, which is a horror book I read this year and really liked. It was weird and trippy and genuinely creepy, so I'm really looking forward to reading another horror book by him! I actually found The Caretaker on Netgalley and requested it, so fingers crossed I get accepted for an ARC 🤞 (I GOT THE ARC! 😆)
Let me know what some of your favorite books of the last half of 2025 have been or what you're looking forward to reading early next year!
I am not tagging anyone in particular, but feel free to do it yourself if you'd like! I'd love to see your answers!
