Synopsis: A SPY . . .

My name is Charlotte Locke, and I’m an analyst for Section 47, a secret government agency that tracks terrorists, criminals, and other paramortal bad guys who want to unleash their abilities on an unsuspecting mortal world. I have a magical form of synesthesia that senses danger and uncovers lies—making me a stealthy operative.

I’m trudging through another day when one of Section’s cleaners—assassins—takes an interest in me. I don’t need my synesthesia to realize that he is extremely dangerous and that he will do anything to achieve his goals—even if it means putting me in the line of fire.

. . . AND AN ASSASSIN

I’m Desmond Percy, one of Section 47’s most lethal cleaners. I’m also a man on a mission, and I need Charlotte Locke’s skills to help me keep a promise, settle a score, and kill some extremely bad people.

Charlotte might not like me, but we’re stuck together until my mission is over. Still, the more time we spend together, the more I’m drawn to her. But at Section 47, you never know who you can trust—or who might want you dead.

My rating: ★★★★★

Oh man, I was so excited to dive into a brand new Jennifer Estep world—you guys know how much I love her writing! And I absolutely loved this book! But no one is surprised. Lol.

So in this world, we’ve got what’s called Cleaners, Charmers, and Analysts working at Section 47, all who have different sets of supernatural abilities. Basically: a bunch of spies and assassins doing spy and assassin-y stuff 😆 On the case in this book, Charlotte (an analyst) and Desmond (a cleaner aka assassin) work together to... well, I don’t know how much I should say. I don’t want to spoil it! But they work together and it is amazing! The story was good and took some interesting turns, some I saw coming and some I didn’t. But I really enjoyed the story!

One of my favorite things about this book (I mean, besides literally everything 😆) was the characters! I loved Charlotte and how feisty she was and how she didn't take shit from anyone, no matter how hot said anyone might be 😏 She also never went down without a fight, which is one thing I love about all Jennifer Estep protagonists. She was also very cunning and smart, and reading about how everything came together at the end was amazing! She did that!

And then we have the hot Australian, Desmond! 😍 I loved him! He was really funny and charming, and he also had his sweet moments. His past was very interesting and very sad, so that made me love him more. Lol. One of my favorite things about him was how respectful he was of Charlotte, never touching her without her consent. While reading this, I left myself this note: Consent is very attractive 🖤 I kinda giggled reading it back now, but you know what? I stand by that! Consent IS attractive! Lol. Anyway, I love him 🥰

I really enjoyed the hate-to-like relationship that went on here. Yes, I said like. There was no instalove anywhere near this book, thank you very much. And Jennifer Estep writes some of the best slow-burn romances! I really liked the banter between the characters, but also the insane attraction between them. There was one scene where I was grinning like a crazy person because it was early in the morning and they were in the kitchen and they were both lusting over the other, and being inside their heads was... it was just great 😆 I was like, “get together already!” But I appreciate that they didn’t, cause I do love my slow-burn romance. But yeah, the sexual attraction between these two was great! And it wasn’t all about the attraction either. They got to know each other and they had some really sweet moments as well. I love sweet moments 🥰

As you can pretty obviously see, I loved this book! Lol. It was action-packed, as all Jennifer Estep books are, and the characters, along with the romance, were great! I really enjoyed the dual first-person POV, switching between Charlotte and Desmond, and I really loved exploring their cool supernatural abilities! Charlotte’s in particular was very interesting! I am SO happy that this series will continue! I cannot wait for more adventures from Charlotte and Desmond because there is so much left to explore of this world!

  1. I love Jennifer Estep (though I am so behind on many of her books!), when I saw that this was the first in the series and just came out last year I got excited. MAYBE I could get in at the beginning and stay on track? Maybe! I'm so glad to see you loved it so much - I also adore a slow burn romance and the concept of this book sounds great. Definitely adding to my TBR. Great review!
