Synopsis: The finale to A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series. By the end of this mystery series, you'll never think of good girls the same way again...
Pip is about to head to college, but she is still haunted by the way her last investigation ended. She’s used to online death threats in the wake of her viral true-crime podcast, but she can’t help noticing an anonymous person who keeps asking her: Who will look for you when you’re the one who disappears?
Soon the threats escalate and Pip realizes that someone is following her in real life. When she starts to find connections between her stalker and a local serial killer caught six years ago, she wonders if maybe the wrong man is behind bars.
Police refuse to act, so Pip has only one choice: find the suspect herself—or be the next victim. As the deadly game plays out, Pip discovers that everything in her small town is coming full circle... and if she doesn’t find the answers, this time she will be the one who disappears...
When I first picked up this book two years ago I heard that it was a very dark book. I was like, “Cool! I like dark books!” But no, guys, our girl Pip herself is in a dark place. And after everything she went through, especially in the last book, I can see why.
I, however, was not in the right state of mind to read this book back then. I just could not deal with her trauma and mine at the same time, so I put this book aside to pick up later (I highly recommend you check out trigger warning for this book, just in case). Well, it’s two years later and I’m in a much better state of mind, and I finally decided I needed to finish this book and series. It wasn’t the perfect ending, the book definitely had its issues, but I liked it overall.
Unlike my first attempt at reading this, this time around I was HOOKED right at the start. I loved the idea of Pip solving a case that involved her. She’s got this stalker that’s becoming more and more threatening and the police, of course, are not taking her seriously. This was so frustrating! After she solved TWO cases for the police, you would think they would take her seriously. But no. So she’s gonna just have to save herself.
And then this stalker case took an insane twist and I was loving it!
I really loved the direction this book took! But then, I was like 47% into the book when things started happening and it felt like I was reading the climax. I was like, okay? Where could we possibly go from here? And then Pip made a very dumb decision and I just...
I wasn’t into it. I understand why she did it, but it was just dumb! There could’ve been another way! As the story went on and plans were made, I started to warm up to the idea. I had loved the first two books in the series, so even though this decision was dumb, I would give the rest of the book a shot. And I was back on board, for the most part. This part of the book was very science-y, which I loved, but it was also scary how much Pip knew about this specific subject 👀
So yeah, I was warming back up to the book when we got to the end and Pip made another dumb decision!
This book was just... it was good until it wasn't, and then I warmed up to the idea of what was happening, and then I hated it again. It had its ups and downs, and it was honestly disappointing because of how much I enjoyed the first two books of the series. That being said, I did like this overall, despite the annoying and dumb decisions that were made. I liked the mystery and the initial interesting turn the book took. That first half of the book was amazing! I loved the premise and how tense the book got, the banter between the characters was great, but honestly, the book could’ve been better and that makes me sad.
