Review: I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

Title: I'm Glad My Mom Died

Author and Narrator: Jennette McCurdy

Genre: Adult, nonfiction, memoir

Publication date: August 2022

Published by: Simon & Schuster

Buy it: Amazon | B&N | Thrift Books

Synopsis: A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

In I’m Glad My Mom Died , Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly , she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

My rating: ★★★★★

I have been intrigued by this book since it came out. I mean, with a title like that you can’t help but pause and go, “What?” But after reading this book and realizing how emotionally manipulative Jennette’s mother was, you understand why it’s called what it is. It’s terrible that her mom had cancer—it’s an awful disease and something no one should go through— but the way she threw that around to get her way was astounding. And that also did not give her the right to treat her family the way she did. Forcing Jennette into acting because that’s something she wanted to do growing up was not okay. Her mom telling her that she just wanted what was best for her and essentially manipulating her into acting... that was rough.

End of Winter TBR

Lately, I've been feeling like putting together a TBR, which if you know me, you know that's rare. Lol. But let's give it a shot! I have been doing pretty well reading-wise so far this year, but right now I'm starting to get into that weird mood where it's not really a slump, but I just don't know what I want to read. But at the same time, I want to read ALL the things all at once! 😆 Does that make sense? Probably not. Lol. Anyway, I'm hoping this list will help focus my mood. I know I won't read all of these before winter is over, but I need options. Especially because idk what my mood is doing right now. Lol.

Review: Covert Kisses by Janette Rallison

Title: Covert Kisses

Author: Janette Rallison

Genre: Adult, romantic suspense

Synopsis: Hot policemen? Yes, please.

If you like romantic suspense with a twist of humor, these three novellas are for you!

Paisley Spencer's phone dies at the worst time—right when she's lost in a bad part of Phoenix. She ventures into an all-night liquor store to ask for directions, and when she returns to her car, three thugs are waiting for her. She has to rely on the mercy of a handsome stranger to escape, but he's keeping secrets that will lead her into even more trouble.

Lydia Robinson is an undercover cop posing as a prostitute in a sting operation. It's not a horrible job. Well, at least not until her ex-boyfriend from high school shows up. Yeah, there are certain times when you don't want to be spotted on a street corner in hooker clothes, especially if you can't explain yourself.

What's worse, her ex wants to save her from a life of crime, and he's willing to kidnap her to do it.

Bethany Smith didn't mean to become a criminal. She especially didn't mean to break into anyone's house wearing only her underwear. Long story. Worst Valentine's Day ever.

But the arresting officer is so handsome, well, maybe it won't be the worst Valentine's Day after all.

My rating: ★★★★★

I love the contemporary romances that Janette Rallison writes, so I was very excited about the three romantic suspense novellas in this book! They all featured someone who was in law enforcement, and the stories were all so cute!

Review: The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

Title: The Woman in Me

Author: Britney Spears

Genre: Adult, nonfiction, memoir

Publication date: October 2023

Published by: Gallery Books

Source: Borrowed from library

Add it on Goodreads

Buy it: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis: The Woman in Me is a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.

In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. The Woman in Me reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history.

Written with remarkable candor and humor, Spears’s groundbreaking book illuminates the enduring power of music and love—and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms, at last.

My rating: ★★★★★

Singing bridged reality and fantasy, the world I was living in and the world that I desperately wanted to inhabit.

I loved Britney growing up—I listened to her music a lot! And even now I still listen to it every now and then. And I did follow the legal proceedings of her conservatorship semi-closely thanks to Emily D. Baker who broke down all the legal stuff. Everything she’s been through has been horrific, but we heard a lot of it secondhand, so I am very happy that Britney was finally able to tell her story. Going into this I was excited but also approaching the book with a bit of trepidation because I knew that whatever lay inside was going to be heartbreaking. And I was right.

Synopsis: Behold the wondrous beauty of Aphrodite, goddess of love and embodiment of the intangible Eros. A creature born of pure force and destined for power and fame, so lovely that the Earth and all its inhabitants bend to please her.

Pitted against Athena, warrior goddess, and Hera, goddess of the heavens, the lovely, cunning Aphrodite must find a way to outwit her opponents in a high-stakes beauty contest, the outcome of which will affect the destiny of mortals and gods alike. Will she do what she must to succeed? After all, all's fair in love, war, and vanity...

My rating: ★★★★☆

Did I purposely schedule this post about the goddess of love to be published on Valentine’s Day? Absolutely I did 😆

Anyway, in this next volume of the Olympians series, we focus on Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. This goddess has a couple of different birth stories—there sometimes tend to be different versions of the same myth in Greek mythology. Aphrodite, for example, is sometimes said to be the daughter of Zeus and the titan goddess Dione, and other times she is said to have been born from sea foam, hence the famous Venus painting:

Synopsis: Prom night has arrived, and Wes Bennett couldn’t be less excited.

Not only is he not going with Liz, the girl he’s loved his entire life, but Liz is going with Michael, the guy she’s loved her entire life. Talk about a nightmare.

They manage to avoid each other at the event, but every glance he steals of her in that gown, smiling up at her date, feels like a punch to his solar plexus.

But when she’s waiting for him after he ditches the dance, he realizes that nothing about the prom even matters.

Because Liz Buxbaum, in Chuck Taylors and a sweatshirt under the streetlight that shines above their spot, is actually far better than the prom.

My rating: ★★★★☆

I loved Better than the Movies so I was so excited when I found out that there was an extra scene written in Wes’s POV.

Synopsis: Ava Granados will never forgive herself for being late to her beloved nana's deathbed. But due to a flash flood that left Ava in a fender bender with a mysterious boy, she missed her grandmother's mystical blessing—one that has been passed between the women of her family upon death for generations.

Then Nana's ghost appears with a challenge from beyond the grave. As it turns out, Nana did give Ava a blessing, but it missed its target, landing with the boy from the night of the storm instead. Was it fate? Ava refuses to believe so. With the help of her sisters and Nana's rather bumbling spiritual guide, she's determined to reclaim her share of the family magic and set Nana free.

For guarded Ava, befriending some random boy is the last thing she wants to do. She's gotten along just fine protecting her heart--keeping people at a distance is a great way to ensure no one ever hurts you. But as Ava embarks on her mission to retrieve the lost blessing, she starts to wonder if getting close to thunderstorm boy is worth the risk.

My rating: ★★★★☆

On July 7 at precisely 9:01 p.m., a boundless, unforeseen storm claimed one life, two hearts, and six destinies.

I don’t read a lot of contemporaries but this book had a lot of different things that really appealed to me: first of all, it had a little bit of a supernatural twist with Nana passing on gifts to her granddaughters upon her death.

Synopsis: PROBLEMS, PROBLEMS EVERYWHERE...

My name is Zane Zimmer. To most folks, I live a seemingly charmed life as a Regal lord and the heir apparent to the powerful, wealthy House Zimmer, and the gossipcasts breathlessly follow my every swaggering move across the Archipelago Galaxy. I’m also a powerful psion capable of telekinesis, telepathy, and telempathy, and my deadly skills and prowess with my stormsword have made me the golden boy of the Arrows, the Imperium’s elite fighting force.

But even golden boys have bad days, and the truth is I have more hard problems than I can solve.

The Techwave is building weapons to use against the Arrows in hopes of toppling the Imperium and taking over the galaxy. But even more worrisome is the fact that my old rival Kyrion Caldaren has a powerful new ally in Vesper Quill. Together, the two of them just might destroy everything I’ve sworn to protect.

I’m supposed to be relaxing with the other Regals during the Summer Solstice celebration, but when an enemy threatens the festivities, I’m forced to leap into action. As an Arrow, I’ll do whatever it takes to protect my family and the other Regals, even though my actions will cause only more problems—and just might end up being the death of me . . .

Note: Only Hard Problems is a 47,000-word book from the point of view of Zane Zimmer. It takes place after Only Good Enemies, book 2 in the Galactic Bonds science-fiction fantasy series.

My rating: ★★★★★

I love Zane so I was very excited when I found out we were going to get a novella in his POV! And I was even more excited when said novella turned into a full-length novel! More Zane!

Literary Nails: Books and Plants

I love doing nail art, but I haven't been doing much of it these last couple of months. But when I recently came across some more bookish stamping plates (because I already have a couple, of course, 😆) I knew I had to get them! So last weekend I sat down and played with one of my new stamping plates, and I love it! The theme for this mani: books and plants.

Synopsis: Perpetual daydreamer Liz Buxbaum gave her heart to Michael a long time ago. But her cool, aloof forever crush never really saw her before he moved away. Now that he’s back in town, Liz will do whatever it takes to get on his radar - and maybe snag him as a prom date - even befriend Wes Bennet.

The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbor might seem like a prime candidate for romantic-comedy fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz’s butt since they were kids. Pranks involving frogs and decapitated lawn gnomes do not a potential boyfriend make. Yet, somehow, Wes and Michael are hitting it off, which means Wes is Liz’s in.

But as Liz and Wes scheme to get Liz noticed by Michael so she can have her magical prom moment, she’s shocked to discover that she likes being around Wes. And as they continue to grow closer, she must reexamine everything she thought she knew about love - and rethink her own ideas of what happily ever after should look like.

My rating: ★★★★★

This was the second Lynn Painter book I read and I freaking loved it! I don’t read a lot of contemporary romances, but when I read two in a row by the same author, that’s how you know it’s good!
