Synopsis: All Magnus Bane wanted was a vacation.

A lavish trip across Europe with Alec Lightwood, the Shadowhunter who, against all odds, is finally his boyfriend. It doesn’t seem like too much for the centuries-old High Warlock to ask for. But no sooner have they settled in Paris than an old friend arrives with news about a demon-worshipping cult called the Crimson Hand that is bent on causing chaos around the world. A cult that was apparently founded by Magnus himself. Years ago. As a joke.

Now Magnus and Alec must race across Europe to track down the Crimson Hand and its elusive new leader before the cult can cause any more damage. As if it wasn’t bad enough that their romantic getaway has been sidetracked, demons are now dogging their every step, and it is becoming harder to tell friend from foe. As their quest for answers becomes increasingly dire, Magnus and Alec have to trust each other more than ever—even if it means revealing the secrets they’ve both been keeping.

The first book in the Eldest Curses series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Cassandra Clare and award-winning science fiction author Wesley Chu, The Red Scrolls of Magic is a fast-paced adventure bursting with magic, humor, and (if demons stop getting in the way) romance that offers a fresh look at the world of the Shadowhunters.

My rating: ★★★★★

A warrior chosen by angels and a well-dressed demon's child, in love and intent on adventure through Europe. What could go wrong?

I was gonna say that this is a book I didn’t know I needed in my life, but that is a complete lie because I have loved Malec since City of Bones 😆 And this book was everything I could’ve ever wanted, and more! Right from page one I knew I was going to love this!

Magnus and Alec are on vacation in Europe when they are made aware of a cult that is going around just making a mess of things. A cult, I might add, that was started years ago by MAGNUS as a joke. Honestly, I thought it was hilarious! But it stopped being funny when you realized that these cultists are killing people. Magnus, as you can imagine, was not having it.

"Oh my God, my cult is so low-rent," moaned Magnus. "I am deeply shamed. I am disowning my followers for being evil and having no panache."

Poor Magnus felt responsible for all this, even though he didn’t even remember the cult was a thing—a real and serious thing—until now. I really enjoyed the story and the unraveling of what exactly was going on. I knew Magnus had no ill intent when he “created” this cult, so it was very interesting to see how it got started and why in the world it was still active. Oh, and the demon they were worshiping? VERY interesting 👀

One of my favorite things about this book (besides everything 😆), was the romance, of course!

They were just so cute and sweet I almost melted into a puddle, I loved them so much 😆 I really liked that we went in depth into these characters and what made them the way they are. Magnus’s childhood, for example, was really heartbreaking! And apparently there’s a reason why he dresses so extravagantly 😭 And then Alec and his reason why his weapon of choice is the bow 😭 Because Jace and Izzy were always rushing into danger and he wanted to have their backs.

There were just a lot of little things we learned about them that were heartbreaking and just made me love them that much more. The book was also told in alternating POVs, switching between Alec and Magnus, which I also really appreciated.

We also came across a lot of other familiar faces in the book. I really loved following the group and seeing their interactions.

I also liked a new character we haven’t seen before, Shinyun. She’s a warlock and I thought she was very interesting.

But yeah, I really loved this! This book takes place after City of Glass, and Alec and Magnus return from this trip sometime during City of Fallen Angels. I would kinda recommend this one be read after The Dark Artifices (or at least Lady Midnight), just because I think you would appreciate some of the characters that make an appearance a little more. There was also a pretty good recap of what went down in the first three TMI books, which was nice. And I also really liked that the chapter titles were City of __, as this sort of nod to The Mortal Instruments. That was fun! But this entire book was fun! At one point they crash a party and all hell breaks loose, and that entire fight was ridiculous, but SO good at the same time 😆 I also liked that all the silliness was nicely balanced with more serious, downright heartbreaking things. And you can’t forget about the romance... It was SO good! Alec and Magnus are so cute together and I loved every minute of it!

Magnus had always had a wanderer's heart. Over the centuries, he had adventured in so many different places, always looking for something that would fulfill his restless hunger. He never realized how all the pieces could fall together, how home could be somewhere and someone.
He belonged with Alec. His wandering heart could rest.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! 😊
