I love the Freak Out Tags! They are so much fun! For this one, I'll only be using books that I have read since July. This tag was modified by Books, Bones & Buffy from the original Mid Year Freak Out Tag.
Best Books I’ve Read Since July:
Answering this question and the next one was so hard because I've read so many good books! It really hurt to narrow it down to only four per category 😩 Lol.
I loved Circe, which wasn't surprising because Madeline Miller is such a great writer! Find Him Where You Left Him Dead and Assistant to the Villain I was actually surprised by how much I liked them because I wasn't really expecting much out of them, but they were both SO good! And Brandon Sanderson is an author I've heard only good things about so I went into Mistborn with high expectations and they were all met! The book was SO good!
Best Sequels I’ve Read Since July:
I read so many good sequels and it was SO hard to narrow it down, but I ended up going with these books by some of my favorite authors! Yes, Lynn Painter, writer of contemporary romances, is one of my favorite authors! 😱 I'm shocked too 😆 But her romances are SO cute! And of course, I'm going to include a Jennifer Estep book. Her books are SO good as well! And this year I finally caught up on PJO and the two newest books in the series were so much fun! I loved them!
New Releases I Haven’t Read But Want To:
An Adult horror, YA mystery thriller, Adult sci-fi, and an Adult nonfiction horror. I didn't get to them this year, but hopefully, I'll get around to reading them next year!
Biggest Disappointments:
I have not read any truly terrible books this last half of the year. I gave all four of these books 3 stars so they weren't bad, but they also weren't that great. And it makes me sad that they're all horror/thrillers. It doesn't surprise me though because those genres can be pretty hit or miss for me. Sometimes I just end up liking the premise more than the execution, which was the case here.
Biggest Surprises:
Going into Nothing Like the Movies I knew I was going to like it because I had read a lot of Lynn Painter's other books and really enjoyed them. But I was not expecting the chokehold this book had on me! I'm not one to get book hangovers often, but this book, for some reason, definitely gave me one!
And Assistant to the Villain seemed like a fun one, but this one also surprised me with how much I ended up enjoying it! It was SO fun and silly!
Favorite New Authors:
I have not read much from these authors, but I loved the little I have!
Books That Made Me Cry:
Had I not been reading these in public (I read a lot in public lol) I would've been a sobbing mess 😠Mistborn, at the end, I actually had to stop reading a couple times because the tears were threatening to spill ðŸ˜
Books That Made Me Happy:
On the other hand, these three books made me giddy with happiness. I love the Percy Jackson world and being able to go back into it with two new books made my cold, black heart so happy 🥰 Same with Assistant to the Villain! I liked that book more than I anticipated! It was just such a fun read!
Most Anticipated Books For The 1st Half Of 2024:
I love Cassandra Clare! It made me a little sad that we didn't officially get a new book from her this year, but I'm sure she's swamped with writing. (Though we did get a new book through her Kickstarter campaign that I would like to read before the year is over sooo 👀 Lol.) Anyway, The Ragpicker King, the sequel to Sword Catcher, a book I enjoyed (though not as much as her Shadowhunter books if we're honest), comes out on March 4th, 2025 and I am really looking forward to it!
She Waits For You Beyond the Dark is the sequel to Find Him Where You Left Him Dead and I actually have an ARC of this one! I'm so excited to read it and see where the story goes! This one comes out March 11th, 2025.
Cold Eternity is a sci-fi horror by S.A. Barnes, whose other two sci-fi horror books I've really enjoyed! I also have an ARC of this one and I am SO excited to read it! I actually haven't even read the synopsis so I'm not quite sure what it's about. Lol. I've been really enjoying going blind into books lately 😆 This one will be released on April 8th, 2025.
And Overgrowth is a new sci-fi horror from Mira Grant! I'm so excited! I love her books! I didn't find out about this one until recently! I also didn't read the synopsis of this one too closely, but the first line says it's a body horror/alien invasion apocalypse situation and I am HERE FOR IT! I can't wait! This one will be released on May 6th, 2025. That seems so far away 😞
Let me know what some of your favorite books of the last half of 2024 have been or what you're looking forward to reading early next year!
I am not tagging anyone in particular, but feel free to do it yourself if you'd like! I'd love to see your answers!
Another fun tag. I've done this one a few times in years past. I'm currently reading Assistant to the Villain and enjoying. I also picked up Spy Family since I see you've been enjoying it, so I'll give it a go. Love that my library has both. ^_^
