Synopsis: It got in us.

After receiving an urgent SOS from a work detail on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is dispatched to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.

Most are dead.

But when the crew arrives, they find an abandoned site, littered with rotten food, discarded weapons... and dead bodies.

Don't set foot here again.

As they try to piece together who—or what—could have decimated an entire operation, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.

My rating: ★★★★☆

I’ve been on a sci-fi kick lately and this book really hit the spot. I mean, it wasn't amazing, but I liked it overall and I really enjoyed the splash of horror it included.

So we've got a search and rescue team responding to an SOS that turns out to be a bit more than they bargained for. This planet they go to has very extreme weather patterns: One side is always in the sun and therefore scorching, while the other is always in the dark with constant bad storms. That sounds awful! The name alone should've been clue enough as to how bad things were going to get, honestly. Lol. It’s called Achlys. I love Greek mythology, so this name gave me pause. Why? Because Achlys was this old, ugly hag who personified the death mist that clouded the eyes of the dead. Yeahhh that's a big NOPE from me 😅 Especially not with the zombie-like creatures they encounter 😬 But you can't deny that it is the perfect name for this place 🤣

I really enjoyed trying to figure out what happened there and what happened to all the people who were doing research on this planet. Nothing good, given the zombie-like creatures I previously mentioned. Lol. But it was really intriguing... and creepy! I loved it! You guys know I love horror, so this was one of my favorite things about this book! The creatures were creepy, and they were made more so when we got chapters in their POV 😰 It was great! 😆

My one issue with the book was the characters. Or more accurately, my lack of connection to them. In the beginning, there were quite a few characters thrown at us, and me keeping them all straight would’ve usually been the problem. But that actually wasn't the case here (which I appreciated, honestly). My issue was that I just didn’t really care about any of them. I liked Nova and Thea well enough, but there was just zero connection there. I was very invested in the story though. That's what kept me going.

But, I mean, overall, I did enjoy this book. There was definitely a disconnectedness there between me and the characters, and all the political talk was also very uninteresting to me. But the book gave me what I wanted: space with a splash of horror. I enjoyed the mystery as the characters tried to figure out what the heck was going on, and I also really enjoyed exploring the world. It was really interesting, but also really creepy, which is a bonus in my book. Lol. There was also a bit of pretty good action, which I also enjoyed. However, I'm not interested enough in this to continue the series. And honestly, after reading the synopsis of the sequel, I’m not all that interested in political warfare it seems that book is going to have. I was much more into the mystery and the killings! 😆 It definitely satisfied my need for spooky things in space.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! 😊
