Synopsis: For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
The idea of going into a virtual reality game has always been intriguing to me, so I was very excited to read this book! And overall, I enjoyed it!
My favorite thing about this book was definitely the world, the game, and the technology. Warcross is basically like Capture the Flag, except with gems. Lol. There were all these fun challenges they had to do and the games were really exciting. I loved the landscapes and the action and the curveballs they were thrown. It was fun! This technology was just really cool and it’s what kept me hooked throughout the book.
The characters though... I didn’t really care for them one way or another. This book was weird in that I was quite indifferent when it came to the characters, but the world itself was so interesting to me that I was fine with it and just wanted to keep reading. Lol. But yeah, the characters were just not anything special. Emi was fine. Hideo was fine. The romance was... subpar, honestly. Lol. I really did not see the charming qualities Emi saw in him 🤷♀️
I did enjoy the overall story and mystery though. The whole thing with Zero was intriguing, though I did guess who this guy was way ahead of time. One thing I wasn’t expecting at all was a certain plot twist that made you wonder exactly who the bad guy really was here. Because the thing they were trying to do with the game... though I get their intentions, it was super messed up! It was straight-up dystopian! I am VERY interested to see where the story heads after this because that ending was insane!
