Synopsis: Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves. But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

My rating: ★★★★☆

Killer mermaids. That’s it. That’s all you need to know. I know I said that about the prequel novella, but it’s still true!

Do I think they found mermaids?
Yes. Of course I do.
And I think the mermaids ate them all.

I really enjoyed this book! The concept alone was enough to get me on board (lol). I honestly didn’t even have to read the synopsis because killer mermaids! I cannot get over how good this book was! I really liked the story of a mockumentary team going out to sea to find mermaids after a different team seven years ago did the same thing, except those guys disappeared, never to be heard from again...

(There is a prequel to this book called Rolling in the Deep and it tells the story of that first crew that went out looking for mermaids. It was good as well! I highly recommend checking it out! But back to this book...)

The horror aspect of this book was so well done! I really appreciated how not-pretty the mermaids were. They were creepy and they were vicious! And the action sequences were very well written too—it was tense and creepy and there was gore and blood all over the place, and I loved every minute of it!

But because of that, the author didn’t pull punches and wasn’t afraid to kill off characters. And there were so many great characters that I liked! 😭 But I guess that’s the point—it made their deaths that much more impactful. And I really liked the diverse range of characters the book had—there was LGBTQ+ rep, POC characters, and even characters with disabilities! It was SO good!

And I’m a nerd, so I really liked the science aspect of the book as well. Lol. I don’t know how accurate it was seeing as how we’re dealing with mermaids, but it was interesting and it made sense for the story, and I think that’s all that really matters. Lol.

The only thing that was a bit disappointing for me was the ending. I don’t know, it just felt kinda... anticlimactic, in a way. But aside from that, I loved everything else about this book! I liked the characters and their banter, the science was intriguing, and just the overall story was so well done! I mean, killer mermaids!! It was SO good!

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! 😊

  1. As a former science teacher, I love when there is science, even in a story like this. I'm going to HAVE to get these to read. I wonder if they are available as audiobooks from the library? Great review!
