Synopsis: This hilarious, fresh take on a classic vampire tale follows a pair of hundred-year-old teenage vampires who are turned mortal and must face the greatest nightmare of all—high school.

Charlie and her brother, Reg, have been vampires for…a very long time. For a century, they enjoyed the glitz and glamour of life as members of the wealthiest vampire clan. But now, after one careless mistake, they’ve been expelled from the vampire community and dumped in the middle of Nowhere, Iowa, to live as mortals.

Suddenly Charlie has to deal with zits, tears, and—worst of all—high school. But things start to change when she and Reg find a group of friends, including the deliciously good-looking Dexter. And though Charlie would give anything to be vampire again, she begins to appreciate some of the new experiences that humanity brings too.

But nothing could make them forget the life they’ve left behind. When they’re offered a second shot at immortality, Charlie is desperate to seize it. It’ll just mean a total betrayal of all her new friends, who will have their minds wiped of their memories of her. She can handle that if it means she can live forever…right?

My rating: ★★★★☆

If you’re like me, you’ve read your fair share of books about just-turned vampires trying to navigate their new undead life. But have you ever read a book about a vampire being punished by turning them back into a human?? Because that’s what this book was!

The premise was SO good! If you have read anything like this, let me know because I really enjoyed this one! It’s such a unique premise to me and this one was done so well! But basically, vampire siblings Reg and Charlie committed a vampire crime that resulted in them getting stripped of their immortality and turned human. On top of that, they’re sent off to live in this little town called Nowhere (lol) and will be attending high school like normal teenagers.

I liked the siblings from the start. Not only was their bickering fun, but the fact that they were vampires for so long and had forgotten what it was like to be human just made things so much funnier! Charlie from the start wasn’t having any of this human nonsense. She was just very pretentious and her first day of school was wild! From the way she dressed to the way she acted... to say she looked down on the humans is an understatement. Lol. Her brother Reg, on the other hand, was very cool about it because he thought this whole ‘mortal’ thing was only temporary. They did end up putting in an appeal, but Sal, their caretaker, said appeals almost never go through, so I was feeling kinda bad for Reg at this point.

Speaking of Sal, I really liked him and the relationship he developed with the kids. He really had his work cut out for him with these pretentious teenagers. Lol. Poor guy. And I’m making these characters sound terrible, but they actually weren’t unlikable! I thought the situation they were in was hilarious! Plus, I feel like Charlie went through some great character development, going from this elitist wannabe Queen Bee to someone who sees the good side of humanity and potentially finds love (with a human, no less!)

The romance was another thing I enjoyed about this book! It had great banter and the flirting between Dexter and Charlie was SO cute! This book actually made me smile a lot. I just really liked this book. It was cute and really funny, and teenagers who had been vampires for hundreds of years suddenly becoming mortal and navigating the human world was such a great concept!

Another thing I loved about this book was the mythos! The vampire lore was SO good! Aaand, I won’t go into it too much because spoilers, but there’s also lore on vampire slayers 👀 And even the town has some very interesting history! It was SO interesting! I loved this aspect of the book!

I just really enjoyed this book overall. It was fun and cute, the premise was intriguing and the execution was great, and I really liked the characters, flaws and all. I liked the romance, though I could’ve used more kissing 😏 And the climax had a bit of action which I enjoyed. But the very end... I don’t know how I feel about it. I liked it for the most part, but I feel like one character in particular, the decision they made came out of left field. At least that’s what it felt like to me. But overall, this was a very enjoyable read!

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think about it? If not, what do you think? Does it sound like something you might want to read? Leave me a link to your review or comment below! 😊
