My rating: ★★★★☆

I loved the One of Us is Lying book so I was very excited to watch the TV show inspired by the book, and I liked it overall! Not as much as the book, but it was a pretty solid first season.

The first episode was actually very similar to the beginning of the book, and it was just really good! The setup of this entire thing... I loved it! And I just loved seeing it all unfold onscreen. As the season went on, the paths the TV show took to get to the end did deviate from the book, but I found that I didn't mind because it still had the same main beats as the original story. I actually liked the alternate paths the TV show decided to take.

As for the characters, I liked their portrayal in the show for the most part. There was one change to Maeve in the show that was shocking to me, but it didn't not make sense for her character in the show... I guess. Lol. It wouldn't have made sense at all for her character in the book, that's for sure. But I loved this Maeve as much as I loved the Maeve in the book.

I also appreciated that the show included some of my favorite moments from the books like the cute scenes between Nate and Bronwyn as they watched movies while talking on the phone.

Or when Nate told Bronwyn about his pet lizard. I loved that scene! Another scene I loved was when Addy chopped off her hair! That was such an important moment for her character development, which was one of my favorite things about the book. Addy in the show though, I feel like her characterization was inconsistent sometimes.

And I don't know how I feel about the reveal at the end. I liked the plot twist at the end of the book because it was wild and messed up, but I don't think the twist in the show had the same impact. I mean, it wasn’t a terrible twist, but I definitely preferred the book one. Lol.

That being said, I did really enjoy this overall. I liked the deviations from the book more often than not, and this iteration of the characters was pretty solid too. I am very intrigued by season 2 because it apparently doesn't follow the events of book 2, One of Us is Next. I'm really looking forward to seeing where the show takes this story.

Have you seen the TV show or read the book? Let me know your thoughts!

  1. I LOVED the show. More than the books, I think. And I got to complain with Sara Thompson (Vanessa) about the cancellation of the show, so that was fun heh. It deserved better!

    1. Wait, no way! You got to talk to her?! That is SO cool! I really liked this first season so I'm definitely going to be watching the second one. But yeah, it's sad whenever they cancel a show you like.

  2. I'm so glad you liked the show! I absolutely adored Bronwyn and Nate's relationship 🥰 I agree with you tho, it would be better if they kept the original "end twist" because it was more unique and emotional.
