My rating: ★★★★☆

This book was intriguing from the start. I love a good mystery! I mean, you have Emmie’s best friend’s brother crawling into her bedroom covered in blood?

I mean, it’s terrible, but it’s intriguing! Lol. I really enjoyed unraveling the mystery even as it got more complex and the secrets started piling up. I actually did end up guessing the culprit behind this mess correctly early on in the book. I was honestly going to be more surprised if it WASN’T this person. It was SO obviously them. Lol.

As for the best friend’s brother, Deacon, I loved him! I actually really liked the romance in this! He was very fun and flirty, though he was clearly going through a tough time.

I, however, wasn’t a big fan of the protagonist, Emmie. The fact that everything she did was to please her mother so she wouldn’t worry about her the way she did over her brother, it was so annoying! I hated her mother! And I disliked Emmie for being such a people-pleaser! And everyone kept treating Emmie like she was made of glass, it was so weird!! Why were so many things hidden from her, like she wouldn’t be able to take it? I didn’t understand! It was frustrating!

But that being said, I did enjoy this book overall! I liked the romance, I loved Deacon, the book was very tense, and the mystery was intriguing. I’ve only read two books by this author so far, but I think she does mysteries really well, so I’m looking forward to reading more from her.
