Synopsis: WHEN THINGS GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

When Zelda Shaye inherits the infamous Sazerac House, she immediately senses that something’s not right about the ancient mansion. Strange noises interrupt her sleep, the garbage disposal hates her father, and things move on their own. Her cute nerdy neighbor, Tobe Friedkin, confirms her suspicions when he tells her everyone knows the house is haunted and over the years members of the Sazerac family have suffered mysterious deaths until they were nearly wiped out.

Zelda is the last female descendant to inherit the legacy, and the family curse. Since her parents don't believe her, it’s up to her and Tobe, with the help of the crazy recluse down the street, and a cat named DeLorean, to lay the unquiet spirit to rest before it’s too late.

My rating: ★★★☆☆

Horror romance is a genre that sounds amazing to me. And while I enjoyed the first book in this series, I feel like I enjoyed this one less 😬 I felt like in His Final Girl, the romance and horror was better balanced, but the cheesy romance in this one sort of overtook things 😅 But that could just be a me issue though. Lol.

Like I said, I found the romance in this one to be... a lot. And so instalove-y... yuck! And both of the main characters were like this. However, I did love how Tobe told Zelda that he wanted to know her better... on any term she prefers. It was so sweet! I also loved one of the neighbors, an older lady named Edith. She was so sassy, teasing Tobe about his crush on Zelda. It was cute!

As for the horror aspect, it left much to be desired, honestly. At least in the last book we had a fair amount of gore. But here, I feel like we didn’t really get to experience much of the haunted house. How do I explain... Like, I feel like we didn‘t see enough paranormal activity in the house before Zelda decided it was haunted. I just wanted MORE. I was also afraid the source of the haunting would be the cliché and horrible Indian burial ground. It wasn’t, thank god! And it turned out to be something quite interesting...

One thing I like about this series is all the fun horror easter eggs. There were so many, but here are just a couple that caught my eye: A guy named Anson Craven designed Zelda's house (as in Wes Craven).Tobe’s last name Friedkin, is that of the director of The Exorcist. A Rami house was mentioned, as in the director of the Evil Dead. And then Tobe’s grandpa Kramer was named after that one guy from Saw! Lol.

Overall, though, I liked the book... I guess? Like, it wasn’t awful, but I also didn't love it. The romance was a bit much and we didn’t get as much haunted house stuff as I expected, especially in the beginning when Zelda first moved in. Omg and the Epilogue!! I’m generally not a fan of Epilogues as is, but this one in particular was bizarre! But all that being said, I generally enjoyed the book. I got some Fear Street vibes, what with the interconnected stories that take place in the same town and with this seemingly cursed family... Yeah, I’m into that. Lol. Plus we had a brief cameo of the two main characters from the last book, so that was fun. I think I'm going to continue on with the series just because I’m curious and really like the idea of a horror romance. Lol. I just hope those two things are a bit more balanced like they were in book one.
