Synopsis: Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller's daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue.
Or so everyone believes.
When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her... for a price.
Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.
Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times-bestselling author, returns to the fairytale world with this haunting retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.
I love a Marissa Meyer retelling, so I was very excited to find out that she was writing a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, and boy what a ride it was! I loved it!
One thing I loved about this book was the different elements that were woven together. Just like The Lunar Chronicles were retellings woven with a strong sci-fi element, Gilded also wasn’t just any old retelling. This retelling of Rumplestiltskin was interwoven with Germanic folklore, something I wasn’t expecting at all, but completely loved! I love mythology and folklore, so this added touch of German folklore that I was completely unfamiliar with was just the cherry on top. I love learning about different kinds of myths and folklore, and the legends and gods that were included in Gilded were very interesting! And it all fit together perfectly with the Rumplestiltskin fairy tale! Everything just made sense and the story was very well done!
And I really liked the characters too! I enjoyed following Serilda as she tried to get herself out of terrible predicaments by lying. I enjoyed listening to her spin tales that were both dark and relevant to what was currently going on, and I just enjoyed getting to know her. And Gild, our Rumpelstiltskin, I adored him! Right from the start, I loved him! He was sassy and the banter between him and Serilda was great! And as the story went on and they got to know each other better, we got to see how sweet and caring he was. At one point he comforts Serilda because as you can imagine she’s in a terrible situation, and I nearly melted. He was just great! And there’s so much more to his story than I thought there would be going into this. I’m so excited to learn his entire story in the sequel! And Serilda is in a pretty bad predicament at the end of the book, so I’m looking forward to seeing how that is resolved, because yikes. That ending was traumatizing for me. My heart.
Okay, I’m being a little dramatic. Lol. But it was insane! I can't wait to see what happens next in the sequel! This first part was really good, and I'm sure the next one will be just as exciting! Especially with that interesting mix of fairy tales and German folklore. It was SO good! I can’t get over it!
