Synopsis: Paradise-1. Earth’s first deep space colony. For thousands of people, it was an opportunity for a new life. Until it went dark.

No communication has been received from the colony for months. And it falls to Firewatch inspector Alexandra Petrova and the crew of the Artemis to investigate.

What they find is more horrifying than anything they could have imagined.

My rating: ★★★★☆

I’ve been on a sci-fi kick for a while now, but horror sci-fi is something I’ve really been craving, and this book really hit the spot. It was great!

The premise was immediately the thing that caught my attention. The crew of the spaceship Artemis heads to a fairly new colony on a planet far away to check in on the people there because there hasn’t been any communication from there in over a year! But after the crew is violently woken up from cryosleep, they realize that there is more to this mission than they were told.

The crew consisted of Firewatch inspector Petrova, Doctor Zhang, Captain Parker, and of course, we can't forget about Rapscallion, the robot on the ship. I loved Rapscallion! He was so funny and just full of personality. I particularly loved seeing how his relationships with the crew developed, especially because he is a robot. I particularly enjoyed the tag team situation at the end of the book between Rapscallion and Parker. Not only was it badass, but given the situation, it was very heartwarming.

I also really liked Parker! There was this one part where Petrova is in trouble (one of the many times these characters are in peril) and Parker takes charge and tells of this AI... it was amazing! But I liked all the characters in general! I thought Petrova was a great leader, and she was persistent as she tried to unravel the mystery of the lack of communication from the colony. There were a couple of times that I felt like she was written very hysterical and I wasn’t a fan. Although to be fair, Zhang was a very anxious person in general and lost it a couple of times too. But overall I felt like they were all pretty solid characters and I enjoyed the banter between them!

One of my favorite things about the book was the horror element. The book was very long and had over a hundred chapters, but it didn’t feel long because the writing was so good and the chapters were very short! It was tense and it kept me hooked all the way till the end, and some of the descriptions were straight-up horrifying! I loved it! Let me give you a chilling example...

This was just such a well-written novel! The tension and action were great, I enjoyed the mystery and finding out what the hell was going on! And let me tell you, the things we discover? Insane! But it was SO interesting! I have never read anything like this before! And I’m really looking forward to finding out more about that and the situation with the planet Paradise-1.

I could’ve used a little more romance, but honestly, I can’t fault it at all for this because this is not what that is at all. But I do appreciate the little romantic tension we did get from Parker and Petrova. And there was this plot twist with one of the characters that I was not expecting, and I was just gutted! I nearly cried! And given this character’s situation, I’m very curious to see what will happen with them as the story continues.

But this was just good. It had nonstop action, and it was very tense and creepy. We were always going from one bad situation to an even worse one as the characters tried to unravel the mystery of Paradise-1. I’m really looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here because I have so many questions! By the end of the book we do find out why there has been no communication with the colony, but there is still so much more to this story and the enigmatic planet that is Paradise-1, and I am so excited to untangle the rest of the mystery!
