Synopsis: Never trust a guy in spandex. In Abby Hamilton’s world, superheroes do more than just stop crime and save cats stuck in trees—they also drink milk straight from the carton and hog the television remote. Abby’s older brother moonlights as the famous Red Comet, but without powers of her own, following in his footsteps has never crossed her mind.
That is, until the city’s newest vigilante comes bursting into her life. After saving Abby from an attempted mugging, Morriston’s fledgling supervillain Iron Phantom convinces her that he’s not as evil as everyone says, and that their city is under a vicious new threat. As Abby follows him deeper into their city’s darkest secrets, she comes to learn that heroes can’t always be trusted, and sometimes it’s the good guys who wear black.
I loved this book more than I thought I would! I don't know why I was thinking I wasn’t going to enjoy it this much... It might be because in the beginning it was sort of reminding me of Jinx, which I didn’t like as much as I thought I would 😬 But no, I loved this!
I really liked the world, which is filled with superheroes. But now that I think about it, it might not be a great place to live in because kids at school literally use the excuse “a pickpocket stole my homework” all the time, apparently 😂 But anyway, there are two superheroes in this town, one of them being the Red Comet, who just so happens to be the brother of our main character! This made things particularly interesting when the Iron Phantom shows up and starts doing shady things around town. But Abby doesn’t think this vigilante is all bad. There’s something weird going on in town, and Abby finds herself unraveling this mystery alongside the Iron Phantom.
One of my favorite things about the book, I mean besides the superhero stuff, was all the relationships! Right from the beginning I really liked the relationship between Abby and her superhero brother Connor. Connor was really funny, but I loved how Abby didn’t take him seriously, superhero or not. Lol. But she was also very supportive of him when it mattered. I also liked Abby’s friend Sarah, who was really sassy and had a crush on the Red Comet... Oh, if she only knew 😆 There was a big section of the book where we don’t get nearly as much Sarah, which sucked. I mean, I loved the romance, but more Sarah would’ve been great too. Lol.
Speaking of romance, it was great! I really enjoyed it! I loved Rylan, who started off quite shy, but really opened up and started cracking jokes as the book went on. He and Abby were just so freaking cute together! They had all these fun little moments, very mundane in nature, where they just got to know each other and bonded, and it was the cutest! I loved it!
I feel like the romance was at the center of this book for the most part, which I didn't really mind because it was sweet and not instalove-y at all, thank you very much. Lol. I also liked the plot they were unraveling. It was interesting! And this book dealt with some serious stuff... it got deep and I enjoyed that. It also had a bit of action, which you know I love, plus a couple of superheroes with interesting abilities. And it was just overall fun and cute! I liked the story, the characters, and their banter and relationships! I highly recommend this one!
